40 Year Old Virgin: Review

Featured — By on September 8, 2005 at 8:56 am

Bad title aside, The 40-Year-Old Virgin continues the successful run of adult gross-out comedies that have hit theatres over the past 2 years. Steve Carell takes the ball in his long-deserved first starring role and runs with it, weaving his way through hilarious sexual encounters and misguided attempts by his co-workers to help him lose his virginity. The “box o’ porn,” Sex Ed class and closing musical number are just a few of the inspired scenes, but what sets this movie apart from many in the genre is that we’re able to connect to the characters instead of just waiting for the next sight-gag or punchline; credit should go to Carell and first-time director Judd Apatow for their work on the script.

Rating: 4/5 – Consistently funny and clever, and a much better effort than 2005’s other successful gross-out comedy, The Wedding Crashers. Not for the easily offended.
