On September 30, 2006 singer, guitarist and songwriter José Feliciano electrified the Mellow Theater at Lackawanna College with a dazzling array of musical compositions. Starting with a traditionally energetic 12bar arrangement Mr. Feliciano and his backing band meandered through instrumentals, love ballads, rock & roll riffs and of course breathtaking, Spanish influenced progressions that could only be accomplished by his virtuoso finger picking/strumming style of play. A style of play that is blazingly fast while accurate mind you…

Aside from Mr. Feliciano… the backing band was incredible. With two keyboardists – one playing in a piano voice, while the other in a organ voice – a tight bassists, and two bombastic yet gentle percussionist the band as a whole was very solid, showing no sign of doubt or under-confidence. They played as strong and clean, as accompaniment to Mr. Feliciano should, with a plethora of knowledge based in different styles, genres and techniques. This was showcased in the bands cover of MJ’s Billy Jean, the Door’s Light My Fire and Hendrix’s Purple Haze/Star Spangled Banner.

…having stated all of that it goes without saying the highlight of the evening was when Mr. Feliciano passionately played and sang a few traditional Spanish songs, hence representing his culture and Scranton today.
