First Night Scranton 2010

There isn’t much time left to plan your New Year’s Eve. Luckily First Night Scranton organizers have already planned your celebration. Here’s a rundown of everything that’s going on next Thursday.

First Night Scranton 2010 will run from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009. Admission buttons cost $10 if purchased before Dec. 25 and $12 after Dec. 25. Children under 5 and seniors over 65 are free. One button gets you into every venue and free shuttle trolleys will be available.

Some of the special events and attractions include the John Bromberg Pictures Moved By Strings Puppet Theatre, face painting, caricatures and crafts for children along with amusement rides and games at Courthouse Square and bingo for seniors from 3-7 p.m. in the food court at the Mall at Steamtown. Magicians Christopher the Magician, Damian the Magician and Tom Yurasits will be performing throughout the night.

The famous People’s Procession including magicians, artists, and puppeteers, will march from Elm Park Methodist Church down to Courthouse Square beginning at 7 p.m. And for Comedy, stop by The Vintage Theater, 119 Penn Ave., hosting two local, hysterical comedy improv troupes – Here We Are in Spain and Steamtown Improv.

Zany Umbrella Circus, an original theatrical circus troupe along the lines of Cirque Du Soleil, will perform “A Clown’s Dream,” the story of a circus clown who’s lost his will to be a clown, at Lackawanna College’s Mellow Theater, 501 Vine St. Also at the Mellow Theater will be Zuppa Del Giorno, an original Commedia Dell Arte clowning show by the Electric Theater Company’s Heather Stuart.

There’s a wide range of musical acts sure to suit any taste. Throughout the night, you’ll be able to enjoy And the Moneynotes; Bare Knuckle, Bog Swing Band, Brenda Fernandes, Cabinet, Charles Havira, Crimson Tears, The Dale Honeycutt Band, Ed Goldberg & The Odessa Klezmer Band, Gallucci-palooza, students of Gallucci’s music; Groove Train, The Hickory Project, The Jim Buckley Jazz Quartet, Joe Stanky & The Cadets, The Main Street Cruisers, Mariachi Tequila, The Taste, Vivace! the Valley View Treble Choir, Wargo-Steveskey Flute & Guitar Duo.

    The First Night organizing committee for 2010 may want to re-evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of offering First Night buttons at limited locations. Not only might there be a financial gain in providing buttons at every venue, but this would accommodate people who make a last minute decision to attend the various activities. I observed families who walked in the cold and snow to the Mellow Theater from the 130 Brixx Restaurant, and upon arrival were redirected to the Steamtown Mall to purchase buttons. It appeared those same families decided not to go to the mall, but rather left the city altogether. Incidentally, we did not see the complimentary shuttles driving by….

  • The Victoriana Lady will provide a Victorian Fashion Show in the Steamtown Mall at 6, 8, and 10pm. Someone failed miserably at providing the proper calendar of events.
    Anyway, the show will include the Victoriana Lady’s collection of authentic clothing and accessories. She will also have 7 models to runway her incredible pieces.
