Scranton’s W.S. Merwin Named Poet Laureate

W.S. Merwin, raised in the Scranton area and honored on Courthouse Square’s Piazza dell’Arte, was just named 17th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry of the United States.

The honorary position, awarded by the Library of Congress, recognizes the strength of a poet’s body of work and the influence he has had on American literature.

Over his 60-year literary career, Merwin has published more than two dozen books of poetry; his latest being 2008’s The Shadow of Sirius which earned him a Pulitzer Prize.

We explored Merwin’s life and legacy during a series on the Piazza dell’Arte artists.
